I've spent the better half of 2 days researching how to root my HTC Evo Design (Hero S) and kept running into dead ends. It seems the phone never caught on in popularity, so info on it is few and far between, mostly for older software. HTC Super Tools V3 was recommended over and over again, but it's a no go if you have anything updated after January of this year. That or it was for the Boost Mobile release. I had to scavenge a good hundred pages to find anything remotely useful. Finally got everything setup, so I figured I'd save someone some trouble by posting the info in one place.
This won't be an elaborate how-to, more of the process with links.
Mind you, I'm writing this guide for those on Sprint, running 2.34 Gingerbread, and running 2.12.651.8.
You'll need to head over to HTC's Dev site to unlock the bootloader. Register, choose the option to unlock. You'll need a windows computer or be running a virtual machine with windows. You'll end up downloading HTC Sync, Android SDK Manager, and Java. Just follow their directions, which were rather detailed.
Install Java first, then HTC Sync, and lastly, Android SDK. I ended up having to download the older version of the SDK to snag a file called Fastboot. For some reason, it wasn't in the newer version they have up. But all the links are provided on HTC's site.
Skipping ahead, once your bootloader is unlocked (it'll show up as S-On btw), you'll need to head on over to 2fastRoms for Clockwork Recovery. I believe you need to register, but that's painless.
You'll be downloading Design_PH44IMG.Zip. Once you get it, delete everything before PH44 and pop that into your SD card. Turn the phone off, pop off the battery for sec, reinsert, press power and & the down volume button. It'll reboot into H-mode, which you did earlier to unlock the bootloader. H-boot will recognize the file automatically and ask if you want to update. It'll do it's thing and reboot. I think I had to turn it off again and go back into h-boot. Scroll down to recovery and it'll boot with the HTC screen and into Clockwork Recovery.
Reboot. Download the SU (superuser) binary and put that on your SD card. Get back into h-boot, then recovery, and install through CWR. I forget the exact option, I think it was install Zip? It was pretty obvious, and I've rooted just a handful of times in 3 years.
That gets superuser installed. Check your Apps folder and it should be in there. You can double check using Root Check off the marketplace.
2Fast just released a multi carrier update for the Hero S, Evo Design (Sprint, Boost, US cellular) that's running Ice Cream Sandwich. Wimax, Wifi, bluetooth, front facing camera, the works are running! It was last updated 08/07. Every rom I've seen so far doesn't have that up and running. CM9 is way behind with the Evo Design, so this is your best bet at running ICS.
Check it out on 2Fast's Kingdom Ics xFuZiionZz-4.3.2
And that's all she wrote! If you have any questions, shoot em over at the messageboard or I guess I'll try to answer what I can. So with that, have fun and go enjoy your device as it should be: free.
