Utilizing the Mercury Engine in CS5 Premiere with low end cards

/ 24 May, 2011 /
Phew! Long title there!  I thought this might help anyone with a mac. CS5 Premiere comes with GPU acceleration which uses the video card to render effects. Well, if you're using one of 5 high end NVIDIA cards (their Quattro series).  The Mercury Engine uses the CUDA driver to offload the rendering from the CPU to the GPU.  At least that's how I understand it.  But there are other graphics cards which support CUDA, which means they also support the Mercury Engine.  So some clever folks figured out how to enable these cards in CS5.  Which means the GPU will render your effects in live time.  Sure, it depends on your video card having a certain amount of ram (768 I think), and supporting the latest CUDA Driver.  It still isn't a substitute for getting a better video card, but every little bit helps!
