A Sunday With Mike Obedoza

/ 12 December, 2011 /
Xsjado skate rider and good friend of mine, Mike Obedoza (or Obe for short) mentioned me in his blog, 'Blading with Knives', a while ago and I didn't catch that.

I hadn't seen him in months, and hadn't shot with him since his ONE online Blade Life Interview.  All I knew that day was I was meeting up with him and Jeremy Soderburg to shoot in Gardena, CA at some freeway barrier to roll in spot.  No idea what to expect, how to light it, etc.  Rolled up to the spot and it was awe inspiring! One of those 'Seriously, that's gonna be an awesome photo' moments.

It took a while to set up, mostly to hide the flashes out far enough out of the long shot but close enough to be effective still, even with zooming & full power.  That would be the problem with speedlites.  I yearn for some Alien Bees, an Einstein...a Profoto set up... now accepting donations! *wink*

It was a full on blue sky and noon sunny day, so you have to work with that in mind.  It's the main light while the flashes merely fill in shadows to keep them from crushing and provide some highlighting to your subject.

In the meantime, Jeremy's filming Obe for our video 'Take Your Time'.  Productivity for the win!

Scored the perfect photo, and even then Obi had another fun shot to shoot at that spot.  We headed out to skate down in San Pedro & ended our day at the Carson mini ramp.  Even got to meet up with my childhood rollerblader hero Ryan Northway.  That's another story to tell with a nifty gift.
