It's been a few months since I shot Montre Livingston during his stay out for Blading Cup in November. But with him wining the biggest European rollerblading competition just days ago, figures the Wheel Scene feature dropped the day after.

Much like any other shoot a publicist would tell you "you have 5 minutes," that's what happened to me waiting for Montre to wrap up a video interview, after having just spent the day waiting for him as he was filming for his upcoming VOD section. What I got was the last 15 minutes of daylight, 5 minutes of that was reasonably okay. Spent the time getting him to talk about what's been going on since I saw him last for his ONE Magazine feature I shot, catch up, get him to cut up. I learned he's naturally a showman that parents and kids could look up to.

The image is rather flat, which, wasn't my call. I did my set of edits and Wheel Scene wanted the original out of the camera. I sometimes think camera phones have made us accustomed to unedited photos and their "okayness." Still, it was nice to catch up with Montre and do something for WS.JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-13754855669454544082016-02-19T01:15:00.002-08:002016-02-19T01:15:52.567-08:00The Kindland: My LA In 8 Polaroids

Somehow it slipped my head to post this feature up I was hired to shoot for The Kindland. The editor approached me about shooting 8 polaroids of Los Angeles. Which, turned into going back to experiences from my childhood on the Eastside. Overall happy with how that came out, but with only 8 frames in a pack, I spent a month thinking through every shot!
If you got it, you're still with me. If not, just watch the videos already. ;)

I switched over to Profoto and found myself balking at the Profoto tax. Ooo they have modifiers for days! Oh, for how much? I can either have my engine worked on or get this? Decisions, Decisions....

I asked myself how about just changing out the speedrings? $130. Okay, no. How about just the speedring from Mola (I own the Mola Rayo)? $118. Bollocks. How about Interfit? $50, but poor ratings. Doesn't Paul C Buff make one? $29, but always on backorder. Ebay? $30. Sure, close enough. I'll get 3 and still come under. Wait, what it it's built poorly? Buy 1 to test. No harm no foul if it doesn't work out.

A week and some change goes by and voila, speedring. A bit tight like some of the Ebay reviewers said. It looks oval, not round. It doesn't snap closed effortlessly. Ken Doo made a similar observation about his Ignition Magnum. Probably made by the same factory. Turns out, China skimped out on 1/4" of wire around the ring, causing the extra tightness.

How do you fix that? Pliers and a steady hand. If you want to get this on AB octoboxes, guess what, it's wider than the original speedring and you have to make 4 notches to make it work. That's a whole other post!
Bought 2 more since I solved my problem. I made random observations between actual Profoto collars vs these 3rd party ones, as well as some thoughts on mods for those thinking about jumping on these. There isn't much information go on searching google.

Hope this helps some of you!
I wasn't expecting this for a couple more months, but Revista FHM (FHM Spain for the rest of us) dropped their fitness & sports issue this month, with it a feature on Montre Livingston I pitched them back in December. Right time and place since the Editor In Chief said they were getting ready for an April issue.

To my surprise yesterday, I get an email with this spread. So stoked! The shot was already about a year old, but it found a repurpose getting rollerblading out there in a major magazine. That's gonna be the goal this year...finding ways of pushing shots like this into the public consciousness.
Kinda stoked Powerslide Skates regrammed a diptych I shot of Chris Calkins riding their new imperial 3 wheeler cruisers. We're talking this was his first week or two on them new and I was there when he got them at Blading Cup.

These photos were shot about 3 minutes from being kicked out by a bored sheriff right outside of LA Trade Tech College, as Erick Rodriguez is filming his drone and Chris had stopped blading up and down the street for the drone shot. Chris is always saying it's impossible to get a photo of him without looking creepy or self conscious. I think I managed a nice shot of him without that creepy uncle feeling. lol.JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-39813252490410335772015-12-12T20:18:00.000-08:002015-12-12T20:18:00.613-08:00Features on Impossible Project, SnapItSeeIt, The Booted

Quite a few things going on here lately. I finally got my feature on Impossible Project's Magazine! Fairly stoked to get recognized by Impossible after a few years of shooting with their film. That lead me to redoing my portfolio. Things you should do every so often you know? Back to Impossible...

Took about a year of back and forth since they switched Social Media Coordinators a while back and there were quite a few things going on over there. Still pretty rad! Right as this was going to live, Blading Cup competition was coming up, I approached Impossible about sponsoring me so I could shoot Blading Cup. Last year I went though about 17 packs, so I knew I needed the extra muscle! They gave me some free film, merch, and a good discount on the ungodly amount of film I purchased. Used 20 packs to shoot Blading Cup, Veteran's Cup competition, and the Brandon Negrete Memorial BBQ. So 3 blade events in a weekend! Crazy crazy weekend. After a year of coasting on Beta 2.0 film, I finally got to play with the new film. Fantastic stuff! The colors were spot on, the contrast much improved. Even the reliability of the film. I ended up with 2 + trashed packs worth of film. This year, what 3-4 photos. Max! Oh that was nice.

So with Blading Cup shot, The Booted got in touch about running the photos! Oh that meant so much scanning and cleaning up dust spots. But it was so worth it! To the right is that feature I had with The Booted featuring some 40 photos from Blading Cup. And with that out...

I got to release the whole 150 photos up on my website and trickle the photos out in Instagram where I've had a fantastic amount of support. That lead to a crazy amount of interactions, regrams, and follows. I want to post some of them up later in the week when I get a chance...

Then the popular film site SnapItSeeIt.com ran a photo of mine on this past week's 'Feature Friday.'

Then I received an email asking if I wanted to have an interview feature up on their site! Oh man. That's a trip. I have to start work on that ASAP! It's crazy to see this all come in at once... Before this post gets too long....End Transmission!

It's a bit weird when you start your day checking emails and see one from a known skate brand promoting one of their riders you got to photograph. You think, I can't believe I shot with that person. Click. And then the first thing you see is your photograph as the opener. Scroll down some more. Another photograph of yours. Okay, so my credits were missed, but it's an email, what are they gonna do, unsend? Still, it's flattering. There were 2 other photographers who did shots for BFree's VOD over the course of a year and my photos are being used. I'd say that's something!

Kinda weird when you think you're finally getting recognition for your work. And yet no one knows who you are..but they know they like your photos.

Thanks Adam Johnson for that low key shout out.
It's odd when you're shooting people you've only ever known through videos. You know what they're capable of, but not who they are. Then it's up to you, the photographer, to showcase their personality and yes, their tricks.

It's something wild when I pop up to see Be-Mag pic up on the photo of Anthony Gallegos for his Pro Wheel. Makes for a rad Saturday! That and I get to shoot B-Free later today...That helps too.JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-29915341547884478652015-07-29T12:17:00.001-07:002015-07-29T17:45:45.457-07:00Anthony Gallegos Pro Wheel for Sic Urethane

Going through social media earlier and noticed this ad by Sic Urethane for my friend Anthony Gallegos. Two things came to mind. Couldn't have happened to a better guy! Finally, a company willing to back this talented skater. Two, whoa, that's my photo. lol. Thanks guys for the heads up, but not really. Still, Very rad that they dug the photo enough to turn it into an ad!

(Edit)

Posted this up and actually got a response from the owner of Sic Urethane. I just appreciate that a guy I have long supported, even made a skate video for, is finally getting a wheel. Seems small, but it's probably the best news of the week!

I was going through my social media and noticed my friend and professional rollerblader/musician posted up some songs on soundcloud. To my surprise, he used a portrait I took of him a few weeks ago as his album art. It's surreal given I used to watch him skate growing up and only 10 months ago really got to meet him. And these days, my photos are making it onto his music. It's surreal!

Check out his music if you get a chance on Soundcloud! And if you like him, he's got an Instagram of all his travels on wheels and music production life.

It's been over a year since I shot with Victor Galicia and finally, these photos are out in the daylight! Originally, Wheel Scene wanted these last summer for a possible cover, which turned into the magazine's silence and for a while, no one was sure if they were still alive. After a resurgence, I reached out and shot them over these photos. Though by that point, I had piecemealed several photos to Be-Mag, Haitian Magazine, The Booted. Luckily for me, Victor had a nice stack of images!

It gets weird though. During the interview process, the editor is going back and forth with me, asking questions about Victor because he can't get a solid answer. I'm not sure what to tell him. Victor is an enigma wrapped in a labyrinth. All I can truly say about Victor is you can never anticipate his thoughts and movements.

The good news is the story is finally up! The less than good news is the editor decided the interview raised more questions than it answered. That's what it's like hanging with Victor. You just gotta take him as is.

In Silverlake by the reservoir, I convinced him to let me shoot a polaroid
for my project.

I had the pleasure of shooting Tyron Ballantine who was visiting out from Amsterdam to film his Bladerbang VOD.

I didn't know it at the time, but I would be shooting for his Be-Mag.com Top 5 feature. He's consistant, which makes shooting him a breeze, but it does mean there can't be a malfunction. Of course, there were a few hiccups. A pocket wizard didn't fire or a certain angle didn't work because of the trick choice. In the case of one photo, I had to keep it down to one speedlight and 2 test shots so as not to attract the attention of security. Them's the breaks when you're dealing with location shooting and action sports.

Overall, I'm rather pleased with the final results. Even snagged a couple polaroids of Tyron, which @ImpossibleHQ ended up running for polaroid week (if you didn't catch the last post). Oh right, and Bladergang added me on the opening credits of the VOD.

A bit unexpected to see my polaroid shot of Tyron Ballantine up on the Impossible Project's Twitter page this morning. Mostly because I had posted it up on Instagram after it had been released on Be-mag.com. I'll post up that clipping later today. For now, I'm rather content knowing someone at Impossible is eying me.JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-34306520280317523622015-04-16T13:59:00.002-07:002015-04-16T13:59:39.808-07:00Lux Armor Coverage on ONE Magazine

A couple weeks ago, Lux Armor in Long Beach, CA had their 'Bash' event, that brought together a VIP feel with 50 lucky ticket holders, watching 25 of the best rollerbladers in southern California. I snapped up a number of shots throughout the night and ONE Magazine was juiced to run my photos of the night.

I went with a single strobe set off to the side for a more dramatic kind of lighting. Not something you see when it comes to skate competitions, as they generally go with even lighting and usually on camera. Just the nature of the beast in skating. Here are a few samples from the night...
I caught this little gem on Pratik Naik's Facebook page which he got from Akshar Pathak. I haven't posted anything in a while even though I've got a number of magazines that just came out at once! More on that later!
Things have been quiet this past holiday and I've been away from social media. Pop on today and a few congratulations...on what? I was so confused. Only to get a link to ONE Magazine's website and I see this! Guess I've had a busy year when my peers and contributors to the magazine voted me 2014 Blade Photographer of the Year. So how to celebrate not a clue! Now to let that sink in because I can't quite believe it!JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-18154805767347163232014-12-23T15:32:00.001-08:002014-12-23T15:32:16.272-08:00ONE Magazine Issue #21 Preview

Earlier last week, ONE magazine dropped their preview for issue #21, due out in stores a bit after the holidays. It has been a while coming and for me, a milestone working with the magazine. I worked on a major editorial directly with the Editor In Chief and Art Director. The Art Director, Wes Driver, is also a photographer who I looked up to when I first started shooting photos. There is nothing weirder than driving to his house and walking in, thinking, so, this is the guy who's photos I spent hours analyzing lighting, technique in photoshop, understanding why he did what he did.

There I was in the belly of the beast, with the editor to the magazine I wanted to be in 8 years ago, a videographer who's work I grew up on (Drew Bachrach), and 3 of the biggest rollerbladers in the game (Montre Livingston, Dre Powell, Sean Cullen). And there I was. Wes was shooting in medium format film and I was covering digital for the coverboy, Montre. For a moment, my guard is down and I'm proud.

When I popped online and saw this preview, I was in awe. I wasn't just a contributor with a photo in the back. My photo is one of a few in the promotion. And then, scrolling down.....the main feature — shot by Wes Driver and Jonathan Labez. Speechless. Give that a moment to sink in. I'm still waiting for that to sink in. It won't until I have the magazine in hand. I couldn't even believe a preview the editor sent me of the opening page....my photo.

Pablo I met earlier this year when visiting California, while Keaton I've only conversed with online. Great to finally meet him. It was an impromptu shoot which photographer Sam L Dean helped put together and I ended up running with it. Turns out he had shot Bladergang the night before at the warehouse we were in. No pressure to figure out a different setup. haha.

The shots had to highlight Ground Control's latest product, the "BIG" frames, while keeping the skater anonymous. So I aimed to just do that. You can tell who they are, but it isn't readily apparent. I think we did a great job setting that up.

I was puttering around and checked my email to see an invite on Facebook from Golden Daze, a band out of Echo Park. I knew one of the band members from rollerblading (of course) and he had seen me shoot polaroid on the last few times I had seem him while blading. A month or so later, I get asked if the band duo can borrow my camera to shoot their album cover. I run them through where to get the film, the tricks to using an SX-70, when to best shoot. I didn't hear back for another month. I get asked what I'm up to and if I had time to come over that afternoon.

They have a rough idea of what they want. Their home, standing on the doorsteps. Combined with the polaroid, it would feel like like another time, with these musicians documenting their lives as just another day. We went through a pack, with varying positions and exposures. I left the images with them and said I'd scan whichever they preferred. A few more weeks go by and I swing by to pick the photos up for scanning. After 4-5 months, the above photo was their top pick, which I found out about on Facebook. There's something to be said about taking an analog photo and having zero control over how it comes out, only to see the final results myself after an elongated time.JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-47779593704613722442014-10-23T14:44:00.001-07:002014-10-23T14:45:55.852-07:00Creative Recreation 2014 Fall Line

It's somewhat surreal seeing the photos you helped cultivate out in the world. It's more surreal when you consider who the images are for. In this case, it's Creative Recreation. When I mention I was on set for this line, random friends came out of the wood work to tell me about how they rock a pair or their uncle works for distribution or they kick back with the owners in southbay. So so strange!

This was my 2nd job as a Digital Tech, a 2 day excursion in downtown LA and a studio out in Venice, CA. You suddenly realize how many looks go into a fashion line (answer: a lot!). All in all, there were 14 looks per day, or closer to 30 for 2 days.

Still, it was something else working between a film crew and their schedule, 8 models, multiple stylists and makeup artists, the art director, and the countless other people on set. What an introduction to the career as a digital tech.

For those who are curious, the shoot was mostly done at 1/160, F/22, ISO 100, with a 580EX Canon Speedlite (provided by me) shot anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 power, zoomed in from 80mm-105mm for extra pop. I was constantly adjusting the lighting for the photog, who wasn't too familiar using speedlites.

Now for the extra cool shots from the shoot:
How strange to see these photos with a desaturated skin, makeup and hair a dramatically neon hues, and a blue blustery sky in the backdrop. Especially when we shot these against a black, glossy wall in a downtown LA basement in what used to be a slaughter house. It was the last look of the night and everyone was growing thin...not that you could tell! It's a surprise to see how much post production goes into album covers, let alone images used for marketing a pop star.

As before, it was just a single bare bulb Profoto head at 1/2 power about 8 ft up and centered. 1/160, f/10, ISO 100. In case you were wondering. ;)JCathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12779456098734861337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8301503632720832949.post-7735545341775849992014-10-21T12:19:00.002-07:002014-10-21T12:19:25.660-07:00Gwen Stefani's "Baby Don't Lie" Single

It's strange to see a photo you had a part in making up online. It's stranger when you think it's for a big name like Gwen Stefani and her latest album "Baby Don't Lie".

It was a 14-15 hour shoot where we were given 10'x10' space at a loading garage door to shoot her for 10 minutes at a time, while shooting the music video. Which meant 4-5 hours off, 10 minutes on, times 3. It did give me a perspective into shooting on a big production like that. There are 70+ people doing one thing or another, trying to coordinate what looks like a mess from the ground.

As the digital tech for this shoot, it was fairly straight forward. No hiccups, just minor adjustments to a high up and center single bare bulb Profoto head as the sun changed and affected the fill. In the evening, I placed a white v-flat for fill to make up for the lack of natural lighting. Shot on a 5D MKIII at 1/160th, F/11, ISO 100.

The only thing that I had to be on the look out really was the lines causing the focus on the camera to go wonky, and blowing out highlights. The highlights were troublesome due to the backlighting. I'd have to keep the photographer aware of this and adjust for that seamless handoff, knowing at any moment, Gwen could come out and we'd have to shoot. We just never knew when Gwen would pop out.

The above image though has had a fair amount of work done to it. Mostly to affect the contrast of the walls and outfit, the pop in the makeup, tucking the clothing to keep from looking baggy.
